<h4>DMV Community Talks Importance of This Year’s DNC, Offers Washingtonians Call to Action</h4>

<p>Sheila believes that we can end food apartheid in Ward 8 by increasing access to stable, affordable and healthy food options. Sheila believes that we must make the necessary budgetary investments in small footprint grocery stores, grocery coops, farmers markets and community gardens as well as supporting the expansion of such programs.</p>

<h2>Ending Food Apartheid</h2>

<p>Sheila believes that we need to implement innovative methods to tackle chronic absenteeism and truancy, improve literacy rates for all students, and address low math proficiency by funding a comprehensive citywide strategy.</p>

<h2>Improving Education Outcomes</h2>

<p>While the 60th anniversary of the March on Washington was billed as a national event, a number of area locals came to... commemorate history a<span style="color: var(--color-text)">nd forge a path forward. </span></p><p><span style="color: var(--color-text)">Sheila Bunn, a political leader in Ward 8, cited the 1913 women’s vote march as an indication of Delta’s history of activism as one of the main reasons why she attended the event. </span><strong>“We are doing it again,” Bunn said. “Delta is strong for fighting for civil, human and women’s rights and we will keep on marching.”</strong></p>

<h4>D.C.-Area Residents Embrace March on Washington 60th Anniversary</h4>

<p>“Even before there was an expulsion, <strong><span style="color: var(--color-text-accent-primary)">I’ve been working with other folks in my communities [telling them] we need to stand up as a people,”</span></strong> Bunn told The Informer. </p><p>“I’ve been going to Advisory Neighborhood Commission meetings [asking commissioners to] hold some forums so we can figure out what our priorities are and make sure that the mayor and the council hear them.”&nbsp;&nbsp;<br></p>

<h4>A Ward 8 Special Election, with Some Familiar Faces and Persistent Issues</h4>

<p>Sheila believes in expanding access to homeownership and working to make housing safe and affordable, and providing resources that allow seniors to age in place.</p>

<p><strong>Sheila Bunn for Ward 8 announces her candidacy for the Ward 8 DC Council seat. Bunn to officially file her candidacy with the DC Board of Elections.</strong></p>

<p>The Banneker 40th anniversary alumni celebration marked the launch of the Banneker Alumni Society, an effort to energize Banneker’s alumni network around further supporting the school.&nbsp;</p><p>Sheila Bunn, a 1990 alumna and member of the 40th anniversary planning committee, told The Informer that... <strong><span style="color: var(--color-text-accent-primary)">“We have students from all eight wards, some who need additional support... The Banneker Alumni Society wants to be that bridge."</span></strong></p>

<h4>Banneker Alumni Celebrate 40 Years with Eyes on the Future</h4>

<p>Six newly elected officers of the <strong><span style="color: var(--color-text-accent-primary)">Bellevue Neighborhood Citizens Association</span></strong> were sworn in Saturday by Ward 8 Councilman Trayon White. A standing-room-only crowd witnessed the event which took place at the William O. Lockridge/Bellevue Library. </p><p>The officers include Kemi Morten, president; <strong><span style="color: var(--color-text-accent-primary)">Sheila Bunn, vice president</span></strong>; Jacqueline Kinlow, treasurer; Cornelia Harris, recording secretary; Jaren Hill Lockridge; corresponding secretary and Samuel Thomas, assistant treasurer.</p>

<h4>Officers for D.C.’s Bellevue Neighborhood Sworn In</h4>

<p>Sheila believes in safe, strong, and sustainable neighborhoods. As a parent, she understands the importance of creating safe environments where our children can learn and grow without fear. Sheila will champion increased funding &amp; training for <span style="color: var(--color-text-accent-primary)">Safe Passage</span> and Diversion programs. Sheila knows first hand the benefits of <span style="color: var(--color-text-accent-primary)">Out of School Time programs</span> and will work to ensure more are funded in Ward 8.</p>

<h2>Fostering Safe Communities</h2>

<p>The James Bunn family has lived in Ward 8 for decades and they have gotten involved in its civic and political affairs, said Sheila Bunn, eldest child of James and Linda Bunn.</p><p>“Public service has been and continues to be a family affair for us,” Sheila said. <strong><span style="color: var(--color-text-accent-primary)">“Public service means being a voice in your community, neighborhood and block and trying to make things better for everyone.</span></strong> It also means making sure everyone has a seat at the table and improving conditions in your neighborhood." </p>

<h4>Public Service Ranks High for Ward 8’s James Bunn Family</h4>

<p>Sheila will work to provide our <span style="color: var(--color-text)">Ward 8 businesses</span> with the tools they need to remain <span style="color: var(--color-text-accent-primary)">competitive and expand</span><span style="color: var(--color-text)">.</span> She will lead the fight to help our small businesses <span style="color: var(--color-text-accent-primary)">grow</span> in all of our main commercial corridors. Sheila wants to <span style="color: var(--color-text-accent-primary)">increase</span> the District's funding of <span style="color: var(--color-text)">Main &amp; Great Streets programs</span> vital to assisting our businesses in <span style="color: var(--color-text-accent-primary)">thriving</span>.</p>

<h2>Supporting our Small Businesses</h2>

<p>The Academy has been designed to increase the number of women of color, particularly those who reside in the chapter’s service area of Wards 5, 7 and 8, in the District’s public policy development. </p><p><strong>“What we offer is near and dear to my heart, said Bunn. I decided to do it out of the memory of my father, James Bunn, who was a political activist in Ward 8 and because I am a Black female. I want to help inspire and motivate women of color. We need more women of color in elected office.”</strong></p>

<h4>D.C. Delta Sigma Theta Chapter Sponsors Political Training for Women</h4>

<p><span style="color: var(--color-text-accent-primary); text-decoration-color: var(--color-text-accent-primary)"><strong>Sheila Bunn</strong><strong style="color: var(--color-text-accent-primary); text-decoration-color: var(--color-text-accent-primary)"> receives the highest pro-equality score </strong></span><strong style="color: var(--color-text-accent-primary); text-decoration-color: var(--color-text-accent-primary)">(+7.5)</strong><span style="color: var(--color-text-accent-primary); text-decoration-color: var(--color-text-accent-primary)"><strong style="color: var(--color-text-accent-primary); text-decoration-color: var(--color-text-accent-primary)"> among all Ward 8 candidates.</strong></span> She has a record of LGBTQ advocacy and public service. She demonstrates a depth of understanding of complexity and willingness to navigate ambiguity and difficult decisions. She’s been in the room for major policy wins and continues to show up for the community.</p>
