With deep roots in Washington, D.C., Sheila has dedicated her career to advancing policies and programs that uplift communities, promote equity, and strengthen democratic engagement.Sheila most recently served as Chief of Staff to former D.C. Mayor and Ward 7 Councilmember Vincent C. Gray, where she was a senior political strategist, oversaw community outreach initiatives, and played an integral role in the legislative process. Prior to this role, Sheila directed the Consumer Services Division of the Office of the People’s Counsel (OPC), leading efforts to educate and assist residents with their utility services and expanding OPC’s presence across the District.During the Gray Mayoral Administration, as Deputy Chief of Staff, Sheila was instrumental in implementing citywide initiatives, managing daily government operations, and overseeing a $12.2 million office budget. Her impact on D.C. government is further underscored by her 16-year tenure with Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton, during which as District Director and later Chief of Staff she advised on local political issues, championed D.C. Statehood, and helped develop critical legislation aimed at expanding the District’s legislative and budget autonomy.A steadfast advocate for civic engagement, Sheila has been deeply involved in local Democratic politics. She is an Add-On Member of the D.C. Democratic Party and has been an active leader in the Ward 8 Democrats, serving as First Vice President. In this capacity, she has worked tirelessly to register voters, educate the community on key policy issues, and mobilize Ward 8 residents to engage in the political process.Sheila’s leadership extends beyond politics into meaningful community service. She serves on the Board of Directors for Martha’s Table, is the First Vice President of the Far Southeast Family Strengthening Collaborative Board of Directors, and co-chairs the William O. I want to be your next Coucilmember because I love our ward and I want to step up, fight for, and do whatever it takes to make Ward 8 better for everyone. I want to bring a new voice to the issues that matter the most to our community. Like my dad, my love and passion for Ward 8 inspires me to work hard to ensure that your wants, needs and desires are voiced and addressed. I’ll fight for those most in need; our youth, returning citizens and our seniors.I want to help foster positive and effective local governance and bring together neighborhoods, businesses and government to improve lives and build economic wealth for our Ward 8 families and businesses.This isn't just a campaign; it's my commitment to fight for the resources and respect our community deserves. DMV Community Talks Importance of This Year’s DNC, Offers Washingtonians Call to Action

Sheila believes that we can have strong children, strong families, and strong communities by ending food apartheid, increasing access to healthy meals and fresh produce.By implementing and funding policies and programs like Food as Medicine that integrate healthy food access as a core component of health care, we can address food insecurity and improve health outcomes. Produce Plus, Produce Rx and Food &amp; Friends' Home Delivered Meals are examples that involve multi-sector partnerships between health providers, government agencies, and healthy food retailers to ensure patients have access to the nutritious food they need for better health.

Sheila believes that we can end food apartheid in Ward 8 by increasing access to stable, affordable and healthy food options. Sheila believes that we must make the necessary budgetary investments in small footprint grocery stores, grocery coops, farmers markets and community gardens as well as supporting the expansion of such programs.

Ending Food Apartheid

Sheila believes that increasing student engagement and providing more challenging work will decrease chronic absenteeism and truancy.Improving Literacy Rates for All Students: Sheila recommends implementing OSSE's Early Literacy Task Force 2023 recommendations. These include requiring structured literacy training for teachers and administrators, providing more support to teachers, and recommending high-quality ELA curriculum based in the science of reading. These recommendations are in light of the latest NAEP report which showed improvement in math and reading among the District’s fourth and eighth graders, but also a decline in reading proficiency among eighth graders and no significant changes in math scores.Improving Math Proficiency for All Students: Sheila recommends funding a comprehensive citywide strategy.Expanding Vocational Training: Expanding vocational training options within schools can help more students transition successfully into the workforce. These programs provide hands-on experience and practical skills in fields like healthcare, technology, construction, and automotive repair—areas where there's often strong demand for skilled labor.By offering multiple pathways to success, vocational training can engage students who may not be planning to attend college or who learn better through hands-on experience. It also helps address skills gaps in the labor market and can reduce unemployment among young adults.

Sheila believes that we need to implement innovative methods to tackle chronic absenteeism and truancy, improve literacy rates for all students, and address low math proficiency by funding a comprehensive citywide strategy.

Improving Education Outcomes

Turner’s sorority member, Sheila Bunn, the chief of staff to D.C. Council member Vincent C. Gray (D-Ward 7) and a political leader in Ward 8, attended the march wearing a crimson and crème blouse and pants. She waited patiently at the foot of the lower steps of the Lincoln Memorial to take a picture with many of her fellow members.&nbsp;Like Turner, Bunn cited the 1913 women’s vote march as an indication of Delta’s history of activism as one of the main reasons why she attended the event.“We are doing it again,” Bunn said. “Delta is strong for fighting for civil, human and women’s rights and we will keep on marching.”

While the 60th anniversary of the March on Washington was billed as a national event, a number of area locals came to... commemorate history and forge a path forward. Sheila Bunn, a political leader in Ward 8, cited the 1913 women’s vote march as an indication of Delta’s history of activism as one of the main reasons why she attended the event. “We are doing it again,” Bunn said. “Delta is strong for fighting for civil, human and women’s rights and we will keep on marching.”

“Even before there was an expulsion, I’ve been working with other folks in my communities [telling them] we need to stand up as a people,” Bunn told The Informer. “I’ve been going to Advisory Neighborhood Commission meetings [asking commissioners to] hold some forums so we can figure out what our priorities are and make sure that the mayor and the council hear them.”&nbsp;&nbsp;

A Ward 8 Special Election, with Some Familiar Faces and Persistent Issues

Home ownership is a path to building generational wealth.All Washingtonians should be able to find safe, decent and affordable housing near where they work, shop and play. Sheila will champion policies that make the cost of housing more affordable and work to expand the availability of affordable and workforce housing to support our neighbors of low and moderate means.&nbsp;Homeownership is particularly critical for helping District residents to build equity and grow their families in the District. In 2023, the total number of owner-occupied housing units in Ward 8 was only at 23% compared to the District-wide 41%. Sheila will work to bolster home ownership tools like HPAP, EPAP, TOPA and support housing cooperatives and community land trusts so that more of our neighbors can move from renting to owning.

Sheila believes in expanding access to homeownership and working to make housing safe and affordable, and providing resources that allow seniors to age in place.

The Banneker 40th anniversary alumni celebration marked the launch of the Banneker Alumni Society, an effort to energize Banneker’s alumni network around further supporting the school.&nbsp;Sheila Bunn, a 1990 alumna and member of the 40th anniversary planning committee, told The Informer that... “We have students from all eight wards, some who need additional support... The Banneker Alumni Society wants to be that bridge."

Six newly elected officers of the Bellevue Neighborhood Citizens Association were sworn in Saturday by Ward 8 Councilman Trayon White. A standing-room-only crowd witnessed the event which took place at the William O. Lockridge/Bellevue Library. The officers include Kemi Morten, president; Sheila Bunn, vice president; Jacqueline Kinlow, treasurer; Cornelia Harris, recording secretary; Jaren Hill Lockridge; corresponding secretary and Samuel Thomas, assistant treasurer.

Sheila appreciates the service provided by our local law enforcement. Because of them, we tend to feel safe in our neighborhoods. But police, alone, can't stop the violence happening in our neighborhoods.We must use multiple strategies like conflict de-escalation by trained violence interrupters, mentoring programs, community organizing around gun violence prevention, and out of school time programs for our youth to combat this problem.We also need to value and listen to our young people as they are the ones with the greatest insight on why and how crime happens.

Sheila believes in safe, strong, and sustainable neighborhoods. As a parent, she understands the importance of creating safe environments where our children can learn and grow without fear. Sheila will champion increased funding &amp; training for Safe Passage and Diversion programs. Sheila knows first hand the benefits of Out of School Time programs and will work to ensure more are funded in Ward 8.

Fostering Safe Communities

The James Bunn family has lived in Ward 8 for decades and they have gotten involved in its civic and political affairs, said Sheila Bunn, eldest child of James and Linda Bunn.“Public service has been and continues to be a family affair for us,” Sheila said. “Public service means being a voice in your community, neighborhood and block and trying to make things better for everyone. It also means making sure everyone has a seat at the table and improving conditions in your neighborhood."

Small businesses are essential to our communities. They stimulate the local economy, create jobs, support local events, and contribute to a diverse economic landscape.To support their growth, it is crucial to reduce administrative burdens and streamline processes. Additionally, creating safe public spaces and business corridors can attract investment and further stimulate economic activity.

Sheila will work to provide our Ward 8 businesses with the tools they need to remain competitive and expand. She will lead the fight to help our small businesses grow in all of our main commercial corridors. Sheila wants to increase the District's funding of Main &amp; Great Streets programs vital to assisting our businesses in thriving.

Supporting our Small Businesses

The Academy has been designed to increase the number of women of color, particularly those who reside in the chapter’s service area of Wards 5, 7 and 8, in the District’s public policy development. “What we offer is near and dear to my heart, said Bunn. I decided to do it out of the memory of my father, James Bunn, who was a political activist in Ward 8 and because I am a Black female. I want to help inspire and motivate women of color. We need more women of color in elected office.”

Sheila Bunn receives the highest pro-equality score (+7.5) among all Ward 8 candidates. She has a record of LGBTQ advocacy and public service. She demonstrates a depth of understanding of complexity and willingness to navigate ambiguity and difficult decisions. She’s been in the room for major policy wins and continues to show up for the community.
